One of the great things about Antonín Dvořák’s music is how straightforward it is. He’s never trying to be clever, he just lays out great tunes for all to enjoy – and his Symphony No. 8, full of bright, optimistic melodies is a classic example. Britten’s Violin Concerto is a more serious counterpart, a reflection on war. The piece is one big musical sweep from the first moment to the last, everything building tension until the finale.
